In Face of Tyson Closure, Workers Encouraged to Remain in Crawford County 08/17/2015

In Face of Tyson Closure, Workers Encouraged to Remain in Crawford County

Tyson Fresh Meats, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, Inc., today announced the company will permanently cease beef operations at its plant in Denison. This will reduce production to only 20 jobs at the Denison plant and will impact 404 employees.

While this unexpected news presents a challenge for our communities, we know that Crawford County residents have a positive history of being resilient and able to work together to overcome adversity.

First and foremost, our hearts are with the displaced Tyson employees as they face the sudden loss of their jobs and the uncertainty that can come with such an event. We want these residents to know that we will get through this time together, and that we will do everything at our disposal to keep these residents working and living in Crawford County.

As soon as the news was released, CDC staff and various partners including IowaWORKS went to work implementing an emergency response plan to connect displaced workers with unemployment benefits and an abundance of high-quality jobs already available in Crawford County. IowaWORKS reports more than 500 jobs are listed and available today in the region and many more are presumed available but not listed.

The community as a whole will also be able to weather this challenge and our other local businesses should not despair. With more than 10,000 workers residing in Crawford County, the loss of these jobs represents just a 4% decrease to Crawford County’s total employment, with many of the workers able to be immediately reabsorbed with another local employer.

Many employers are already confirming hundreds of available positions that can absorb the displaced workers immediately. The county’s largest employer, Smithfield Foods, can hire 80 workers alone over the next two months.

Two Events Already Scheduled to Assist Workers and Connect with Jobs

· Emergency Response Event

On this coming Tuesday, August 18 from 9am to 3pm, a special Emergency Response Event will be held specifically for displaced Tyson workers only. The event will take place in Denison at the Western Iowa Tech Community College campus. This event is hosted by IowaWORKS and will feature bi-lingual staff to help connect workers to unemployment benefits, training information, and current re-employment opportunities. This is a come-and-go event so workers may visit at their convenience. All displaced workers are strongly encouraged to attend. Even though they will no longer be on the job, eligible displaced workers will receive 60 days of pay, as required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

· Special Job Fair

A second event will take place one week later on Tuesday, August 25th from 9am to 6pm at the National Guard Armory in Denison. With more than 500 jobs currently listed in Crawford County (and many others not listed) numerous regional employers will be present at a special job fair for Tyson employees (and other members of the public) to meet with regional employers that are hiring for jobs right now. Many applications will be accepted and some interviews will take place on-site. IowaWORKS will be present to assist applicants. Employers interested in participating at the job fair should contact the CDC at info@cdcia.org

The CDC along with many members, local partners and employers are committed to helping former Tyson workers remain employed and living happily in our wonderful community.
